Birth Registration Puzzle
« on: Tuesday 09 December 25 16:25 GMT (UK) »
Edward Kerruish Moore was born 18 January 1895 and Registered by his School Teacher Father
In Salford March Quarter 1895 Vol 8d page 69
Mother's Maiden Name = Christian
Father was John Kerruish Moore who married Margaret Ann Christian
John's Mother was Maiden Name Kerruish
Edward Birth Certificate shows John Registered the Baby's Name as Edward Christian Moore copy just downloaded
But the Typed GRO Registration March 1895 Index shows Edward Kerruish Moore -  when it wasn't  - why not Edward Christian?  - Puzzled. - He used Edward Kerruish Moore from 1901 Census to his Death 25 April 1918 - Most Odd
Any Explanations ?

FreeBMD has only transcribed this once so far, probably from the rather fuzzy tif file, and gives it as KERRNISH.
There is also a jpeg of the same image which is clearer, and is definitely KERRUISH.

GRO index gives the second forename as CHRISTIAN, but the mother's maiden name as CHRISTEAN.

Was the GRO transcriber having an off-moment, and put the correct MMN in the 2nd forename box, then mis-spelled it in the correct box?

Suggest reporting a double error to the GRO, from the foot of the search page.  Your reason for reporting will be the jpeg file, ref ANC-05/1895B1-M-0395.jpg

If they accept that, then you can report a different error to FreeBMD!

You need to magnify the printed index image quite a lot to see it clearly, but when you do, it is a 'u', not an 'n'.  The handwriting on the certificate is unclear - but the MMN is correct.  The GRO index entry is bonkers!

Name:                                          Mother's Maiden Surname:
MOORE, EDWARD  CHRISTIAN     CHRISTEAN
GRO Reference: 1895  M Quarter in SALFORD  Volume 08D  Page 69

This is the version of the name that the certificate has been copied from, except they have not copied the MMN as (mis)spelled.
(Corrected)

I have just looked at the Lancashire local BMD site: https://lancashirebmd.org.uk/

It appears as:
MOORE   Edward C       1895   Broughton   Salford   BRO/66/67

MMNs not indexed at this date.  Broughton is the sub-district.
