Royal Artillery Love /Nicholls Families
« on: Tuesday 09 December 25 03:54 GMT (UK) »
I have been trying to find information regarding my relatives who were in the Royal Artillery. I believe they were of Scottish decent. This is what I already know
John Love a gunner in the Royal Artillery,  born about 1800 and died in Gibraltar in 1828 of "sickness". He married an Elizabeth Nicholls (born Glasgow, Renfrewshire in 1803) in 1820 in Plumstead, Greenwich (her father was a gunner in the Royal Artillery & on Elizabeth's death certificate it had her father listed as just Nicol ). They had a son William John Love Born 1823 North Hyde Heston Middlesex. (he also joined the Royal Artillery in 1839 and died in 1860).
I would like to know where or how I could find out more about Birth dates & parents and where they came from in particular Elizabeth Nicholls & John Love. At a stumbling block. Thank You

As that is an early date the usual place to find out more will be parish records but as you don't know where he came from then that is a dead end.  Unfortunately the British Army did not hold records of its soldiers at that time other than muster rolls and most of them are lost.  The Artillery was a large regiment with many batteries and did not recruit regionally.

There are attestation papers for a John Love b circa 1801 in Lanark into the Artillery on Ancestry but he joined in 1823 and was discharged in 1824 so not your John.  I am afraid there is nothing else close on Ancestry's military records and quite a few baptisms for boys of that name in 1800 so lots of candidates.

Thank you that is about where I got to in my research. I have a few possibilities of parents but nothing definitive.
