Help deciphering surname in Scottish record
« on: Friday 05 December 25 18:19 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I'm having some difficulty trying to decipher the maiden surname of the woman in this Scottish death record. The man is John Sherry (although seems to be written here as Shirrie) and the woman's forename is Margaret.
I'd really appreciate some help with this if anyone has any ideas?
Thanks in advance

I think it may say :

M.S. Unknown

I'd suggest you use the report a problem  issue button to ask SP to either  re-scan if possible to get a better image or tell you what it says

It's Mary Hughes, who died in Edinburgh in 1861.

I think the surname is written here as “Sheera”
Looking at the census, Mary was born abt 1797 in Carrick Ireland.
The son James has a Roman Catholic baptism in Edinburgh.

I would agree that Margaret's maiden surname has been recorded as Unknown.

John Sherry's surname is written as Shirra.  I have a Sherry or two in my family tree, and they are recorded in the same way in the earlier records.

Best wishes
