Hannah's last name.

On 30th December 1802 at Stapenhill, Robert Goodall of Longford married Hannah Warton of Caldwell.
I have never been able to find any mention of Hannah before this in the censuses and at her death her birth is 1777.
I was looking at the marriage record and noticed that there was a marriage of John Wetton on 18 Oct 1802 John also of Caldwell. Hannah Wetton made her mark as a witness.
Hannah Warton also made her mark at her marriage.
Given the widely different spelling of names at this time I am wondering if they could possibly be the same Hannah.

Thank you Neale 1961for your interest. You have the right Hannah, Unfortunately the worton on Find a Grave has been added by someone who has similar information to me.
I have found that Find a Grave can be useful but it tends to have mistakes because the person who added some of the information had a mistake in their family tree.

Yes, I agree. Sadly, it is becoming worse for errors. People just add what they like.

Regarding the John Wetton who married Mary Garrot  in 1802 Stapenhill

Census shows John Wetton / Whetton born abt 1798 Stanton

Baptism 6 July 1800 Stapenhill
John Wetton s/o Joseph and Sarah Wetton (abode Stanton)

I don't think they are the same John Wetton. John Whetton born 1798 is unlikely to be marrying in1802

There are quite a few of Wetton / Wooton  baptisms in the Stapenhill (Stanton) area at the right time.

Possibles -
Ann Wetton bapt 1777 d/o Henry and Elizabeth (abode Stanton)

John Wetton bapt 1775 s/o Thomas and Elizabeth (abode Caldwell)

Also a Hannah Wetton bapt 10 May 1784 d/o Thomas and Elizabeth (abode Caldwell)

Your Hannah is consistent with Linton as place of birth in the census. Linton is only a mile from Caldwell.

Re. misspelling, is the name Warton on the 1802 Stapenhill marriage quite clear? The reason I ask is that FindMyPast has the baptism (transcript only) of a Hannah WaLton, 1777, Church Gresley, parents Wm & Mary. Church Gresley is just spitting distance from Caldwell/Linton. The parents married 1776.

Yet to find a marriage/death for a Hannah WaLton to rule her out definitely as a possible candidate for Hannah WaRton.
