Henry Marshall
« on: Wednesday 03 December 25 13:04 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I hope all is well with everyone.

My 4x great grandfather was Henry Metcalfe Marshall, born in 1814, North Shields.

Yesterday I came across his Masters and Mates certificate from 1851 on Ancestry. I know this is the correct Henry Marshall because of the address and D.O.B. on the certificate. Looking at the following pages attached to the record is a list of the ships he had been on since starting in 1830 aged 16.

I can make out the first two, 'Loyal Standard' (a Sunderland ship), and Argo I think is the second. However I can't really work out the others and would be grateful for any help!

And secondly, what is the trade he worked in? To me that looks like Coarting?

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated,
Thank you.

Morland / Stark (Durham/Yorkshire)
Nunn / Schofield (Durham)
Simpson / Hill (Durham/London)

I'd say the trade was "Coasting".

Not sure about the 3rd ship but the others could be:

Alpha
Hermione
Bramley
Tiberius

I agree with ‘coasting’.

But I thought the penultimate name looked like Bransberg or Bramberg.

Definitely Bramley. There are several newspaper mentions of the ship Bramley captained by Marshall engaged in coastal trade in 1849-50. Here they are sailing from Boston (Lincs) to Stockton in November 1849:  https://www.findmypast.co.uk/image-share/cfd26afc-1eb8-4e6b-bd44-9b17774f9966

Hi, thank you both for your help.

I've come across this, which I need some help with.

For the 'Marks', it think it says "'__' in the eyes and seaman nose".

Can anyone make out what the first word might be? Last or cast?

Thanks again.
