Death notice
Morning Herald, 1 October 1836
At Gloucester, Sept. 20, Mr. Robert Lumley, of Great Scotland-yard, Charing-cross

There is a burial down there for him age 60, which would be spot on.

Thank you jonwarrn,

You have given me exactly what I wanted.  Because of the age difference, I thought Robert (Who died in 1806) was Christopher's grandfather.  But this also explains why Robert played no part in running the King's Head inn - he was dead before Sarah took it over.

jonwarrn,

A closer look reveals that Robert Lumley (who died a week before Christopher Lumley was baptised) could not have been Christopher Lumley’s father.  This Robert was married to Mary Wheatley but Christopher’s mother’s maiden name was Sarah Errington..

Robert Lumley and Mary Wheatley had a son named Robert who married Sarah Cowans in 1800 so it couldn’t be him either.

The only other possibility is that Robert Lumley (Christopher’s father) was from a different branch of the same family since he and the Robert who died in 1806 were both from Brancepeth, both were farmers and both farmed at nearby Witton Gilbert.

Hi
As you said, Robert's wife Mary died in 1799 (19 October)
Burial at Lanchester 21 October 1799
Mary Lumley, age 58
Wife of Robert Lumley, Carpenter

Then Robert Lumley married Sarah Cowans in 1800 at Jarrow.
From the abstract of the licence we know that both Robert and Sarah were widowed.
Which in a way proves it is the same Sarah who gave birth to Christopher, because there is a marriage at Witton Gilbert, 4 January 1783

Sarah Errington

Burial at Witton Gilbert, 13 February 1798
John Cowans, age 49

In his will proved in 1806 (which I should have read properly), Robert does name his eldest son George Lumley of Spring Gardens, London.
And if anything should happen to Sarah then George becomes guardian to Christopher.
Sarah Cowans, daughter of Robert's wife by her first husband is also mentioned in Robert's will.

So that will really confirms everything. I do think Robert Lumley junior also went to London, and remember that in his will proved in 1837 he named his brother George, living in Charing Cross.
