The 1837 PCC will plus codicil of Robert Lumley, coal merchant, names his nephew Wheatley Lumley of Suffolk Street, Charing Cross and also Robert's brother, George Lumley of Suffolk Street, Charing Cross is mentioned as well!

You have given me exactly what I wanted.  Because of the age difference, I thought Robert (Who died in 1806) was Christopher's grandfather.  But this also explains why Robert played no part in running the King's Head inn - he was dead before Sarah took it over.

A closer look reveals that Robert Lumley (who died a week before Christopher Lumley was baptised) could not have been Christopher Lumley’s father.  This Robert was married to Mary Wheatley but Christopher’s mother’s maiden name was Sarah Errington..

Robert Lumley and Mary Wheatley had a son named Robert who married Sarah Cowans in 1800 so it couldn’t be him either.

The only other possibility is that Robert Lumley (Christopher’s father) was from a different branch of the same family since he and the Robert who died in 1806 were both from Brancepeth, both were farmers and both farmed at nearby Witton Gilbert.
