James Atkins, miller at Earl Stonham, Suffolk, c.1755-56
« on: Sunday 30 November 25 17:19 GMT (UK) »
My perusals through the Sun Fire Index in London has turned up another Suffolk miller.

This time its a gentleman called James Atkins, who was milling at Earl Stonham in 1755-56.  I know nothing about him.  He does not appear in the paper (but a James Atkins appears to have married Ann Coates at Earl Soham - near by and very, very similar village names).

It would be great is someone could help confirm they are the same man, and if so which village he was at.

As always, thanks in advance,

In this record, James Atkins and Ann Coats, singleman and miller, and singlewoman of Earl Stonham, were to be married at Earl Stonham.

Hi Vance,

That's interesting, as I have following, which I got from the Licence book at the old Gateacre records office, Ipswich.

1756/02/29, Marriage Licences 1751-1760, FAA:50/2/89-93
“James Atkins, miller, married Ann Coats of Earl Soham.”

I might need to re-check this in the light of your more recent information.  Perhaps there was a typo back in the day, so I missed transcribed?

Thanks

Hi Windy,

The marriage was in fact held at Earl Soham on 29-2-1756 by Licence. The wits were John Coats & Mary Coats.

The image is available on Ancy.. if you have a sub.

Thanks Alan.

You confirmed what I copied down by hand after a visit to Ipswich Records Office, but this means two separate records show two different villages (spelt dangerously similarly).

I'll really need to go back to the Hold to look at the original data I think.
