Thanks for all that, I probably will get carried away, I'm forever disappearing down rabbit holes that lead nowhere. I'll restrict myself to the 1836 Thomas for now because if he's wrong then they all are.
At £7.50 a pop I need to set rules. I think I've been spoiled by Durham Diocese wills, mostly free online and nicely indexed.

If you can get to York to visit the Borthwick, then you can view all of the Probate Books and download copies of any wills you want to a USB stick free of charge.

RowanR - Ironically I'm in York next week but if I broke away from carrying the Christmas shopping to go there I'd be for the high jump !
A trip on my own for family history would cost quite a bit more than all the copy fees added together.
