"200 Alvaston UD"

Can anyone help as to where or what this place was? Its in Nantwich. "200 Alvaston UD" is the place of death for Obadiah Barber in 1943. He was 71.

He was born and spent most of his life in Nether Alderley. His family were a well established farming family in Nether Alderley. He had various occupations: farmer's son, jobbing gardener and also working in service as a footman in Lord Stanley's household at Alderley Park. The last census I have found him on is the 1921 when he working at Alderley Rectory as a cowkeeper/gardener. I can't find him on the 1939 Register.

He was best known for playing the horse in the Alderley Mummers, a traditional play performed annually at Christmas in the Tenants' Hall on Lord Stanley's estate.

He appeared to go "off grid" during the 1930's and was rumoured to be living as a hermit in a cave in Nether Alderley, sometimes being mistaken as the Wizard of Alderley. He was also seen in the churchyard covered in a bedsheet pretending to be the ghost of The Grey Lady.

I have confirmed he died in 1943 and his death was registered in Crewe. My searches keep coming back to Alveston Hall. He could have been in service there or maybe it was some kind of geriatric hospital. He was buried in Nantwich Cemetery, Whitehouse Lane. The informant on the death certificate is "T L Jones, Occupier, 200 Alvaston, Nantwich".

Thanks.

Thanks. So the former Nantwich Workhouse which became a Public Assistance Institution in 1929 and then later on the Barony Hospital. I can rule out Alvaston Hall for sure now.
