William Jones, Stockton
« on: Saturday 22 November 25 09:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, a bit of a difficult one being a very common name. I have William Jones Daniels on the 1881 census for 22 Leonard st Stockton. He was with his mother Ann Daniels. She was down as being born in Colleen but it should read Caerleon and he as ditto. I dont know what happened to either of them. Williams sister Isabella married and emigrated to America. Thank you, Phil.

This death registration seems to fit:

Q3 1882 Stockton
Ann Daniels, 50

Added: I checked the Leonard St. address in 1891, unsurprisingly he is not there.

Thank you, so if she died before the next census it makes it almost impossible to trace William. Although he was down as being born in Caerleon, he was actually born in Abercarne, Monmouthshire when his dad also  William Jones was alive. Going back to the 1881 census, do you know what the abbreviation is in the last column after his name ?. Just read the other posts regarding Ann. Thank you all, Phil

Is it an addition to the place of birth?: the enumerator seems to have been happy to use the column for this elsewhere on the page.

I can’t think of anything obvious with that. So going backwards 1871 census Ann is with her second husband John Daniels at Fry st in Darlington. 1861 Ann is with her first husband William at Lower East st Middlesbrough. So some time between 61&71 William died presumably in the North East.

Can you clarify which name we're looking for please. Is it William Jones as in the title of the post, or William Jones Daniels as in your opening query?

Also you've said where he was born, but not when.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. William Jones was born in 1856. The 1861 census says Aberdare but 1871 says Abercarne. Both as William. In 1881 census he was down as William Jones Daniels. Maybe at this time he started to use his stepfathers surname alongside his.He was down with his mother Ann Daniels. Thank you, Phil.
