Going back to Hugh's obituary- "The deceased, who was fifty three years of age, was the only living representative of a well-known family who held land on the Brooke estate, County Fermanagh, for over two hundred years."
I was thinking John Maguire might have been a landsteward to Brooke family but perhaps he was employed as a gardener there (and possibly family had worked to them for several generations).

Have you considered that he might have gone to the US with his daughter?

Thanks everyone.

Just received further information from a family member which may mean a change of direction.

It appears John MAGUIRE was Catholic and he married a Protestant, which resulted in him being kicked out of the family and moving to Belfast. This information also said that John's parents both died in the potato famine.

He only had the two children Hugh 1843-1896 and a sister that I mentioned in the original post who went to the US.

Have found a death in Belfast in 1887 for a John MAGUIRE in Strandtown, which is where Hugh was living. Wife Elizabeth was the informant. He was 60 which might be a bit young to have a child born in 1844, but in this game you never know.

Ian C

So where's Elizabeth Maguire's death record?

I don't have access to BNA but it looks like it. It remains to be seen if they are referring to his business address and residence or two residences at Wandsworth Villa.

I wonder if John was actually a carpenter, given that Hugh was in the furniture making business?

On Hugh Maguire marriage to Sarah Mitchell in 1870 Hughs address is recorded as 53 Arthur Street

Hugh's will executors were Sarah J. Maguire, Widow, and George A. Maguire, Gentleman.

I wonder who was George A. Maguire? His eldest son was George Jordan Maguire and he would be 25 years old at the time of his father's death.

His wife was Sarah Ann, not Sarah J., so anything is possible  ::)
