Who Was Murray Scott of Whickham?
« on: Wednesday 19 November 25 18:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

On the 29th January 1797, Isabella Scott or Milburn was baptised in Whickham, near Gateshead, in Durham.

The last name on the original record "Scott or Milburn" was to show that she was an illegitimate child.

I think this Isabella Scott was the same Isabella Scott who married Thomas Blenkinsop (1797-1840) on the 28th June 1818, in St. Paul, Jarrow, Durham, England; although I am not sure about this as there was many people called Isabella Scott in Durham at the time.

On the baptism entry for Isabella Scott or Milburn, the parents were given as:- Isabella Milburn and Murray Scott. However, I have been unable to find a baptism for a Murray Scott that occured in Durham in the 1700s at all!

So the question remains; who was Murray Scott?

I would gladly appreciate all help given to me in trying to find more about Murray Scott and who he was.

Thank you,

JackB

Are you assuming Murray Scott was born in Whickham or do you have any proof that he was?

Isabella was b 1797 so Murray could be assumed to be born 1770 (ish) but not necessarily in Durham

Presumably you have seen the original baptism entry?

Have you found a marriage for Isabella and Murray? If so have you seen the original marriage entry?

Did Isabella and Murray have any other children? Have you seen their baptism entries?

What was Murray’s occupation? Have you followed him in Durham in case there are some records of his employment or maybe some kind of business?

Just a few thoughts of some records which might indicate Murray’s origins, particularly if there are children born within the Shute Barrington time frame - those baptismal records are a goldmine, and would be my first port of call.

Good luck.

Hi,

I originally saw the baptismal record on Find my Past, and I could not find any other parish records from that time in Durham that mentioned a Murray Scott.

I have had a little look on Durham Records Online and could only find one record (the one for Isabella), although I may need to have a more in depth look.

Thank you,

JackB

Evan though the father is known, Isabella is illegitimate so wouldn't she be Isabella Milburn the same as her mother.
Alternately she could go by both names.

The original marriage entry witnesses are William Jameson and Jane Dodds.

They or other family members sign the majority of the marriages, so they don't appear to be relatives.

Where are you finding Isabella Blenkinsop in 1841.

You’d expect her to be Milburn - presumably Murray knew she was his child and wanted her baptised under his name as well.

Was he required to be there at the ceremony?

Could Isabella given the information that was included in the record without him being present?
