there's a workhouse admission Edgware 19 July 1895 for
Ellen Pryke b. 1861
Ellen  b. 1884
Charles b. 1885
Joseph b. 1889
Benjamin b. 1891
John b. 1893
noted as destitute.
Perhaps that's when Mr Brown left the picture.   :-\

I spotted that in my search & saved it just in case - did I ever think helping a friend find her roots would get this complicated😂🤣

Sound like Mr Brown the builder was a tad unreliable.

Thank you Osprey it’s all starting to fall into place.

Don't think he was playing Happy Families! Wonder if he was married to someone else so couldn't marry Ellen?

found them in 1891. Census does show Braw, but I'm not finding other results for Samuel Braw...

Wow - thank you.  It’s definitely them Ellen’s pob is Oxford on the 1891 original. The old style handwriting is just a bit curly but I’m confident it is Brown not Braw.

That was a good find  Osprey, but I have not been able to progress things any further with Mr. Brown the builder/ joiner, after quite some time looking. It does say BRAW on the 1891 census, but all the following records say BROWN.
I cannot find either Ellen or Samuel in 1881.
If all those 5 children were fathered by Samuel Brown, then he and Ellen were together a fairly long while.
Maybe the addresses on the birth certificates for the children will help to pin point Ellen's movements.
They were in Willesden in 1891 and then by 1895 Ellen and children are in Hendon workhouse.
So did Samuel Brown die between 1891 and 1895? - somewhere in the Willesden / Hendon area?

Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

More research into Helen Pryke bot 1856 Middleton Stoney as suggested by Neale1961 needed but I’m off out today.  Thank you all for your help.
