Thomas McKnight

Thomas McKnight was married to Agnes Wood in Scotland in 1833.

He died in Kirkdale, Lancashire in 1867.

In Ancestry public trees his parents are give as different couples.  Almost 50 / 50.

Some state his parents were Alexander McKnight (or McNaught) and Mary Craig of Moffat, Dumfriesshire.  Others state George McKnight and Agnes Weir of New Cumnock, Ayrshire.

His marriage is pre-1855 so there is nothing on Scotland's People. Nothing in Parish Registers.

Does anyone know of this man and his family?  Or, is there a way I can find out his parents?

May I ask how do you know he married in 1833 if you can't find a marriage entry in Scotland's People

He was 57 when he died so birthyear approx 1810

Where does this family fit into your own FH.  Given the difference in surname we could waste a lot of time researching a different family.  1841 entry is incorrectly shown as McNight on Ancestry - error reported

The name through history has evolved or been Anglacised.  The modern version is McKnight. McNight is not uncommon in the first census.  McNacht and McNaught are further back although McNaught is still current.

I'm a McKnight whose family originated in Moffat. The McKnights moved north to Glasgow and surrounding towns.  Thomas McKnight, if he was from Moffat, unusually moved south to Lancashire.  However I'm not so sure now, since other people are claiming he originated from New Cumnock.

If his death certificated denoted his parents then that could be a solution.
