It is interesting that both Jabez and his brother Tom became beerhouse keepers because in their twenties they had been miners and both narrowly escaped the Clay Cross pit disaster of 11 June 1861. 
They must have concluded that mining was too hazardous.
It is possible (timing-wise) that the James Brittain who drowned at Tong, Shropshire in October 1873 was the Jabez who was living with his family at Chesterfield at the 1871 census, which was taken on 2 April 1871.  Who knows, his mining traumas might have played on his mind to the extent that he left home and assumed the name James.
I am trying to establish whether the Derbyshire Brittains and the West Midlands ones were connected.
I have found the burial register for James - 18 October 1873 at Tong, entry 571.  If there was a memorial stone that might help, but I can't trace one.

Thomas Britton said during the inquest that he was 22 years-old and had been working in number 2 Black Shale pit ten or eleven years.

Perhaps the 1871 census is wrong? Did William and Amelia Britton actually exist?
Arthur Richard Britton was the licensee at the time, wife was Ann(ie) (as per 1881), the ages match up with William and Amelia.
And it was Arthur R Britton who had a brother Bennett

Could also the newspaper report be wrong about the Star & Garter?

He was the son of Jabez' brother Thomas, his wife Maria, died in January 1871, probably of childbirth complications, but why was the baby living with the Farnsworth family? Could Hannah had been his wet nurse, although she had another child later that same year?

I wonder why the marriage records of Jabez' daughters Hannah Martha (m. 1881) and Maria (m. 1888), both in Rotherham, say their father's occupation is 'boiler maker"?
