Thank you everyone for your helpful replies.  It's amazing to discover so much just by asking.  I have downloaded Jabez' death certificate from the GRO.  Unfortunately the image has been badly cropped and omits significant details (I assume).  Has anyone experienced such a problem before?
Am I permitted to post the image on here so that you can see what I mean?
Thanks again

You can report this to the GRO - I’m pretty sure they refunded me when I had a similar badly cropped  certificate

Thanks Jo6100.  I'm not too bothered about a refund from the GRO - it was just £3.00.  I just hope they can send a more complete image - if they have it.  The certificate is not the standard death certificate but I couldn't copy and paste the image here and I don't know how to attach it.
The certificate is for the following GRO reference:
BRITTAIN, JAMES age at death 33
1873 D quarter in Shifnal Volume 6A page 405

Can you make out occupation or residence?

Neither unfortunately Heywood.  The image shows just the right-hand 3 columns:
column 1 indecipherable
column 2 date 20th December 1873
column 3 name of registrar
Most of the certificate is missing.  I've sent a query form to the GRO and hope they have got a more complete record.

The newspaper snippet about the suicide 1873 (James Brittain) mentions his having had a pub in Wolverhampton. The newspaper snippets relate to a possible pub, the Star and Garter, Victoria Street.

Need as much info as possible to link "Jabez, the Old Ship, St Mary Gate" to "James, former publican, Wolverhampton, died Tong"..

I assume the death registration downloaded from GRO is the 1873 James, Shifnal although poster states "I have downloaded Jabez's death cert"

Yet to positively link Jabez Brittain with death of James Brittain.

1871 2930 /66/23
Star and Garter hotel, Victoria Street, Wolverhampton
William Britton, Hotel Keeper, b Birmingham
Amelia, wife
Bennet, brother,
Horatio, nephew
Mary, niece

Jabez' father Thomas Britton didn't have a son called William but I guess he could be a cousin.  I'll search Thomas's other children.

In 1881 , Arthur Britton is the licencee.
The censuses have really poor writing and on both of them, there are nephews and nieces.
I’ve tried going back in the censuses and can’t see any connection to Derbyshire.
I have doubts that there is a connection to Jabez.

It's intriguing.  Jabez' grandson was Jabez Britton and his great grandson was Arthur Britton, my dad.
