Thank you all for such rapid responses. They confirm what I have so far. I'm baffled how there is nothing at the GRO for his death.
And that you for your welcomes. I think I'm going to enjoy RootsChat.

over the generations I've found the surname spelt Britton, Brittain and Bridden.
AlanBoyd I've got some newspaper items posted by achesterfieldblogger but none of it mentions Jabez - is there something else? Apologies - I'm not well versed yet in genealogy - I don't know what the references indicate on your second post. Cheers

You don't have to apologize Melton - we all had to start at some point and we tend to assume that others will know what we mean.
Never be afraid to ask - we all love trying to help others and have all been helped in the past BY others.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Ah AlanBoyd I've found the newspaper piece you mentioned - the theft of 14s from the till at the ship inn. thank you.
Pennines, I'll try to spell your username properly in future.

Derby Courier 12 Oct 1872 (1) & Derbyshire News, 13 Sep 1873 (1a)
Can't see Jabez described as landlord in either the '71 Census ("licensed victualler") or Jun '70 court case ("master" of girl accused of theft). Reasonable to assume he was no longer at the Old Ship Inn by Oct 1872 when Farnsworth enters the lists?
Ah - cannot post attachments re. status of post. But looks like you have access to newspapers?

There are newspaper snippets regarding a Joseph Brittain at the Industry Inn, Fitzwilliam Street, Sheffield.
Whilst there are a couple of Josephs in 1871 and 1881, I can’t see any connections to being a Publican.
