Railway Collision Kilbirnie Dec 1882
« on: Thursday 13 November 25 14:42 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone point me in the direction of more detail about a Railway Collision at Glengarnock Ironworks, Kilbirnie 18th Dec 1882.

One of the 3 men killed was a Charles McCan and I am trying to establish if this is the same Charles McCan married to Jane McCan (McArthur, McLellan), living in Barony, Camlachie in 1881 census.

I have a newspaper clipping but cant find much more detail on Mining Sites etc..

Regards

Ian

Have you checked ScotlandsPeople for Charles McCann's death certificate?  It will tell you the hame of his widow.

Having obtained the death cert, Charles McCann who died in the accident is not the Charles McCann I was hoping for. This man is 37 years old, which puts his birth at 1845, the Charles I am looking for is born around 1820~25.

I am struggling to find him after 1881 census with his wife Jane McLellan, they were in Barony. I was hoping this story was why he disappeared.

Many thanks though for trying

Have you found Jane's death?

If she died in Scotland her death certificate will tell you whether she was married or widowed, which will narrow the search for Charles.

If she didn't, that might indicate that they left Scotland and died elsewhere.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I haven't been able to find Jane McLellan's death cert. She had 3 surnames McLellan, McArthur and McCan, all 3 have multiple variations of spelling. Also Jane can be Jean, Janet, Jeannie also Jessie. So I am trying combinations on SP.

Other family trees have her death as 1895 in Edinburgh, but I am yet to find hard evidence.
Its a tough one, but I shall persevere.

Probably because there isn't any.

A search for a death of J* Mccan*, female, in Midlothian, 1893-1897,  produces just one result, who was four years old when she died in Lasswade in 1893. I cross-checked and there is a matching birth in 1888.
