HOLLOWOOD from Ardwick
« on: Thursday 13 November 25 11:22 GMT (UK) »
George and Sarah Ellen (Williams) were married in 1882 in Ardwick. George was a nut and bolt maker. His father is named as George a collier. (from Lancs Parish Clerks)

William Edward was born in 1883 and when baptised George was an engineer. Thomas Gilbert was born in  1889 and when baptised George was a fireman.

The 1891 shows Sarah Ellen and their 2 children living with her parents at 5 Leigh Avenue. It states she is married.

I cannot find George so I don't know when or where he was born.

I found a George Hollowood in 1881 in Ardwick a labourer in iron works, born in Darleston but I think I've found him in 1891 married to Martha with a son George.

Just hoping someone can solve the mystery for me.

I would think it is him.
Both George and Sarah Ellen have different partners in later censuses with no marriages that I can see.
If this is the case, Thomas Gilbert and George Edward, the son of George and Martha were born within months of each other so that might cast doubt on Thomas’s father.

There is another birth, and death, in 1886 - George Harold Hollowood.

Thank you all for your replies. It looks like George didn't stay very long with Sarah Ellen but then lived with Martha and had another family!

I couldn't find a marriage for him to Martha either.

Thanks again

when William Edward & Thomas Gilbert married in 1911 & 1920 respectively, they both named their father as George Hollowood - deceased. Suppose they could hardly say otherwise as their mother was living as another man's wife.
