Winburg orphanage in OFS
« on: Thursday 13 November 25 08:29 GMT (UK) »
I found (in a family study):

”Winburg is a classic Free State town. [- - -] orphanage (estab.1902)
[- - -] are built along tree-lined roads which radiate from the town square.”

So Winburg orphanage was established in 1902.

Is it possible to find out who were placed there in the 1900's and 1910's? Are there any records still existing..?

I doubt there are any records from that time. Do you have a name,of a person who was in there? It was established in 1902 near the end of the Boer War as a concentration camp for Boers.
Austin, Ayling, Alborough, Bescoby, Cheal, Groom,Rathbone,Tarboton,Lyell and Smith.

Yes I have it, and because she is a very close relative I prefer not to share it publicly but send you a private message.

You can read about the Winburg Concentration Camp on the UCT Libraries website here https://www2.lib.uct.ac.za/mss/bccd/Histories/Winburg/ - and you can search the Library's database for prisoners' names, ages, farms etc.
It was a concentration camp from 1900 to 1902, so maybe it became an orphanage afterwards.

Thanks for the information, but the person I am looking for wasn't a POW (or what they should be called) but an orphan child.
