Sophia WHYDAH 1787-1861
« on: Thursday 13 November 25 03:42 GMT (UK) »
Sophia was born Sophia SYRETT in 1787 daughter of Robert and Mary SYRETT. At some stage she may or may not have married Edward WHYDAH and they had a daughter Mary Louisa in 1808, who went on to marry William Giles BARTON in 1827.

In 1861 Sophia is with George and Sarah MORTIMORE in Camberwell, listed as an aunt. She was the aunt of Sarah nee MITCHELL, whose mother was Louisa SYRETT, a sister of Sophia.

Sophia died later in 1861.

Can anyone find her in 1841 or 1851. Not showing up that I can find.

Edward died before 1827 when Mary Louisa married. She was a minor and permission was given by her widowed mother. He is proving difficult to find as well.

Thanks

Thanks PatLac.

Probably went to Dublin with her sister.

If you put the name in the newspapers it mainly comes up with Blackbeard or a place in West Africa.

Just noticed that Sophia was in London in 1814 as she was a witness at her brother Robert's first marriage to Ann Hollands.

Whydah is a unique surname. I don't have an Ancestry subscription, but I can see 8 records of a Sarah Whydah (London, England, Land Tax Records, 1692-1932) around 1825.
