A plaque for an ancestor - how do I find decendents?
« on: Wednesday 12 November 25 08:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I haven't been here for a long time! Hello to everyone who remembers me!

I have found my passion for the ancestors again and have found an unmarked grave of a wonderful couple who should be remembered.

Hubby and I are going to buy his Great Grandparents the plaque they deserve but would like to let decedents know we are doing it.

I have the names of the 12 children and know 2 of the dependents but what is the correct way to go about finding and informing some/most of the others?

All advice, thoughts, help will be so appreciated.

From, Australia, thanks in advance,

Ted

Does the cemetery have anyone on file as the owner(s) of the plot? That might be a good starting point.
England: Barnett; Beaumont; Christy; George; Holland; Parker; Pope; Salisbury
Scotland: Currie; Curror; Dobson; Muir; Oliver; Pryde; Turnbull; Wilson
Ireland: Carson; Colbert; Coy; Craig; McGlinchey; Riley; Rooney; Trotter; Waters/Watters

Is it a private grave but without a headstone or is it what was known as a common grave

Agree with Carole. You might need to find out if there is anyone buried in the same grave. Even if there is you can probably still erect a headstone. The cemetery should be able to guide you on this.

Depending on whereabouts in Australia the grave is and what records are available, there is a lot online these days, and some records do show other internments. This is the case for some of my ancestors are were buried in a grave with an earlier burial of an unrelated child. If my memory serves me correctly, they do have a headstone, which names the couple, but not the other resident.

Regarding informing other descendants, unless they are interested in family history they may not even be aware of this couple, and tracking down possibly hundreds of living descendants in Australia may be an impossible task. If you have names, electoral rolls might be a place to look, though I think they only go up to 1981? Then there is social media of course.
