He was with the Cassidy family in 1911!

In 1901 the soon to be married Annie has a 10 year old brother John.  Wonder if he's your John?

Is this the Cassidy family then in 1891? Parents John and Bridget

Possibly something to investigate/eliminate?
If we go back to 1881, there is a daughter Margaret Cassidy, 10, born Ireland

A possible marriage for her?
March 1888 Sunderland 10a 757
Cassidy, Margaret
Duncan, Samuel
+2 others

1891 census in Monkwearmouth
Samuel Duncan 25
Margt Duncan 19
John Duncan 1

Is there a birth reg for John?
What happened to them?

Added... I think the following this is John Joseph Donkin born 1894 so not the John we are looking for.

There does seem to be another Donkin family living in Victor Street in 1901 though nothing to suggest they may be related to the search so apologies if this confuses everything!

1901   20 Victor Street, Monkswearmouth
John and Hannah Donkin and children, there is a John but he is down as aged 7 so age not right. John was a Cartman.

I think possibly Hannah's maiden name was Faulkner.

Newspaper piece 7th July 1898 for the death of Elizabeth aged 2yrs 7 mths. Only daughter of John and Hannah Donkin of 108 Victor Street.

The same family with extra children (mmn Faulkner) but no John jnr appear to be at 46 Zetland Street, sunderland in 1911. Transcribed Duncan on FindMyPast.
Sinnock/Sinnicks...Brighton,Greenwich.

I think that they were two Donkin families living in Monkwearmouth at the time, so essential I get the 'right' John.
There is no birth registration for a John Donkin of the right age in Sunderland, but I may try the Duncan option!

I know that the birth dates on the 1939 register can be inaccurate but it's such a pity that John's was not recorded by the hospital (I realise he not have known it).

His marriage certificate to Mary Fitzharris may have to be purchased

There are a quite a number of Duncan/Donkin threads on here.
I have Duncan ancestry myself, so keep an eye on these things!
It seems a big coincidence to me if Margaret was of the same Cassidy family, and married a Duncan, had a son John of the right age, and then...disappears??

I know! The fact that John Donkin used the surname Cassidy as an alias, when arrested by the police and whilst probably living with Annie Prior (nee Cassidy)....assuming we have the 'right' John!

Everything I have is accurate from his marriage to his death and burial...its just his early life that is unclear

Another Donkin/Cassidy couple also in Sunderland around the time, it seems.

(according to GRO birth record) There is a Robert Donkin born 29 January 1885 at Spelter Works Rd Sunderland, parents George Donkin (holder in iron shipyard) and Ann late Collins formerly Cassidy.

Ok...so I've taken a look at the Donkin/Duncan/Cassidy leads.

Margaret Cassidy married Samuel Duncan in Sunderland on the 3rd March 1888

I too can find them on the 1891 census, although I cannot find a birth registration for John Duncan, aged one year at the time.

I think Margaret may have died on the 29th March 1895, aged 23 years - that death, I think, did not take place in Monkwearmouth.

Other than that - the family disappear from census records.

The Robert Donkin born in 1885 to George and Ann (late Collins nee Cassidy), I believe may have died on the 24th September 1886, age given as one year.

The family were still living in Spelter Works Road in 1891 with children, John, 21 years, Joseph, 14 years, and David, 10 years.
So, I think we can rule them out.
