I don't know if this will help in anyway, but looking at 1911

Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette

22 November 1913

There is a report of a group of men in court for stealing iron from the shipyard and

'John Donkin alias Cassidy (22)'

is among them. John is the only one who has not been up in court before and is ordered to come up for judgement when called upon.

He was with the Cassidy family in 1911!
I tried to find a family connection but was unsuccessful

In 1901 the soon to be married Annie has a 10 year old brother John.  Wonder if he's your John?

Realise it will not help finding John's birth, but his death was announced in the Sunderland Echo Tuesday 11th March 1941. Page 4

DONKIN - At Cherry Knowle Hospital, on March 8, aged 50 years, John the dearly beloved husband of Mary Ann Donkin. Interment at Mere Knolls Cemetery on Wednesday, cortege leaving residence (9 Thompson Street) at 2.30. p.m. R.I.P.

There does not appear to be a headstone.
