Currently researching Commonwealth War Graves also including those who are named on family headstones in Ryhope Cemetery, Sunderland. One such headstone is for Wilfred Eastwood. Wilfred's birth was registered June Q 1893 in Bury, the son of David & Ellen Eastwood (nee Harry). In 1939 he is residing at 13 Cross Princess Street, Farnworth, Lancashire with widow Jemima Smith (nee Ingram).
Wilfred marries Jemima 9th June 1943 at St. Paul's Church, Ryhope, Jemima originally from Ryhope.
The death of Wilfred, aged 56, occurs on the 2nd March 1950 at 13 Cross Street, Farnworth, death certificate gives cause of death as 1a Cardiac Hypertrophy & Dilatation 1b Arteriosclerosis. He was laid to rest on the 6th March in Ryhope Cemetery.
A section of the inscription on the headstone states: Roll of Honour, He Gave His Life For His Country
1939 - 1945.
I have been unable to find a record of Wilfred's war service, is there anyone who perhaps has carried out research or may be related to Wilfred who can shed some light as to where he served.
Would be more than pleased to forward photo of headstone to anyone interested.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
