Just discovered Ancestry has a separate set called Billingshurst in Woollen - as if it was a place name.

Not come across Woollen but Billingshurst is surrounded by small settlements and villages.

Woollen refers to woollen shrouds, you often see "buried in woollen" after the name and date of the deceased. Ancestry clearly think Woollen is part a place name ( Billingshurst in Woollen) - like Pool in Wharfedale, Bilton in (the) Ainsty etc

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burying_in_Woollen_Acts

That’s very interesting thanks. And very confusing for researchers who see death iin Woollen and then look for a place called Woollen which doesn’t exist.

Thanks. I have learnt the hard way that although info on trees sounds ok it must be backed up with concrete proof.  So many people take info from other trees thinking it’s true  . Many years ago I was one of those people.

I transcribed a Nonconformist register from late 1700s to late 1800s, it was a Wern Chapel in Minera.  It had it's own burial ground attached.  People from villages a distance away used  it.   I would consider looking for Chapels in your area with burial grounds. It's difficult as my family were Nonconformist also.
This might be worth a pot. It seems to include burials,  but you could ask first.
Maybe there are members on this Sussex page.
