Newspaper Lookup, John Leonard Raw d. 1896 of Durham
« on: Monday 10 November 25 22:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone could do a newspaper lookup for me please. I'm wondering of there is a newspaper death notice/obituary for Mr. John Leonard Raw, (1857-1896) of Darlington.

He died on the 8th February 1896 in Sedgefield Asylum of "General Paralysis of the Insane" aged 38.

Additionally, on his death certificate he is just called Leonard. His names varies between John Leonard and Leonard; but never John.

Thank you,

JackB

I don't have access to the whole item, however there is a death notice in the Durham County Advertiser on 14 Feb 1896

"At Sedgefield Asylum, [?] Leonard Raw, aged 38 years, formerly of Darlington."

Sorry, didn't see your reply Carole.

Hi JackB

We've been in touch about the Raw family before.  I "did" this line for a cousin several years ago.  Here's the death cert:

Durham County Advertiser 14 Feb 1896: “At Sedgefield Asylum, 8th inst., Mr Leonard Raw, aged 38 years formerly of Darlington”.

Burial Register has Leonard Raw, of Thompson Street. North Cemetery: Consecrated ground, Section A, VV, Grave No 37, Ceremony conducted by Rev E Hutchinson.  [Sarah his wife: Sarah Jane Peel, is No. 38]

Let me know if you are missing any other details, or send me a message.  I have his birth cert and marriage cert - Reg. Office so not online.  I have put all relevant details into Postem notes on the entries on FreeBMD.

Popping out now, be back later.

Hi Tilly,

Thank you very much for a copy of the death certificate for him, I'm very grateful.

General Paralysis, it seems like an awful, awful way to go; I can't imagine how horrifying that must have been. I remember my family telling me that he died of the "flu", all lies! I'll send you a pm regarding his birth and marriage certificate later on. I do have a photo of him somewhere, I'll try and find that later on.

Thank you,

JackB
