Mystery of married couple in Calne, Wiltshire: Thomas and Anne Partridge
« on: Sunday 09 November 25 13:17 GMT (UK) »
I have some details of my ancestors, but they 'disappear' after having 2 children and I can't trace them anywhere, even though I can track their children. Please can someone help?

Thomas Partridge born 1801 in Miserden, Gloucestershire
Anne Brown born 1803 in Calne, Wiltshire.
They got married in 1829 in Calne and have 2 children, Isaac (1829-1909) and Louisa (1832-).

In 1841 Isaac and Louisa aged 10 and 11 are living in Curzon St in Calne without their parents (workhouse?). Then 1851 onwards Isaac stays in Calne and Louisa moves to London.

Be lovely if I can solve this mystery!

I wonder if both parents passed away, have you looked for deaths for them?

If both children married does it have father as deceased?  Note this wasn’t always noted down even if they were.

Welcome to rootschat  :)

In 1841 Isaac and Louisa aged 10 and 11 are living in Curzon St in Calne without their parents (workhouse?).

Going by the occupation of Joseph Brittain who is listed above them it would appear to be a Lodging House  :-\

Thanks Milliepede, I can't find deaths anywhere. Thomas Partridge is listed as a 'Maltster' for Isaac's wedding, so very much alive!

rosie99, yes, a lodging house, but can't understand why the children would be there without the parents though.

The fact that he gives a profession does not prove he is still alive

ADDED - He was a Labourer on both of the children's baptisms

True Milliepede, but I can't see any other indications of a death.

Joseph Brittain married Rachel BROWN in 1839 - they were both previously married.  Is this why they are living in the same house as them in 1841.  The marriage gives no indication of Rachel's maiden name as no fathers are listed

From where came the info that he was from Miserden GLS? His marriage record gives his parish as Shepperdine which is near Berkeley.

Added
In the 1851 census Joseph and Rachel BRITTAIN seem to be living with a Robert BROWN age 41 and his wife and children. Robert may be a step son of Rachel and uncle of the Isaac and Louise.
