Help needed to restore Horace Rowles please

This is a photo of Horace Rowles who volunteered to serve in the Canadian Army Service Corps as a driver in WW1. He was born in 1885 at Burford, Oxfordshire.
I don't know why this picture has such an awful background.
Hopefully it can be improved without altering the soldier too much.
