Ladyhawk - that’ll take some looking at! I did order the death cert but, instead of identifying the informant, it simply refers to the inquest so I assume the informant was the Coroner. It takes us no further forward.

There is a report of the inquest in the
Stockport County Express 23rd April 1931

It mentions that Arthur Rhodes was still living with his wife at the time.

For there to be an affiliation order, we would be looking at a child not belonging to his wife.  Perhas from during his time in service? Unless the original court records survive, perhaps at Stockport Archives, they might be nearly impossible to track, though.  It is highly likely the child was not registered under his surname.

OK, I’m back! Thanks everyone for your contributions. I clearly can’t comment on everything individually but I’ve eventually found that the answer is relatively simple.

To cut a long story short, Arthur defnitely was the man who comitted suicide on Tibb Street. The clincher is the 1921. Obvious really, having spent time working through Arthur's siblings, Edith Ellen Rhodes/Willock, with who's family he was living in 1921, was Arthur's older sister.

All I have to do now is work out who the child was that he failed to pay for!

(PS - Ladyhawk - regarding "Marjorie" - I've yet to investigate how she fits in but I think I might know where she's buried. "Marjorie" is inscribed at the bottom of a headstone in Willow Grove Cemetery [John James Lowe and Catherine Ridgway + their son John] but, on the photo' I have, half the line below it is down in the weeds.)

On further reflection, I believe that the inscription reads "MARJORIE - Grand Child Of The Above". This would fit with the B/D info Ladyhawk identified and she is the child of Arthur Rhodes and his wife Edith Lowe. She died aged 25 days.

Per the Manchester Rate Books, the occupier of 46 Price Street 1931-1936 was Florence Gwendoline Rhodes.

Arthur Rhodes of Stockport married Florence Gwendoline Roberts in Gwersyllt, Denbighshire in 1926. He gave his age as 26.
