WAAF WW11 service records
« on: Wednesday 05 November 25 15:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Just on the off chance has anyone managed to find service records/information for women who served in the WAAF during WW11 and if so how and where?

From research I have done it would appear that many were lost and those that did survive would be at TNA. Putting WAAF into discovery brought up 239 entries. I am looking for any information pertaining to my husband's mother Dorothy May Jopling (deceased) in the period 1942-1944

Many Thanks

Sally

If she was not commissioned eg WAAF G, Section Officer etc then the records will be in a batch being transferred from MoD to TNA 2025/2026. They will start appearing in Discovery closer to 2026.

For the moment make an online application to RAF Disclosures at Cranwell via .GOV.UK - they will tell you where the records are, possibly give a ref number that TNA can use to find on the pallets or even give a copy of the microfilm version that MoD has at the moment.

Hi Ross

Thanks for your reply, and how ironic as I live there. I will certainly make enquiries. I could not find anything on TNA linking to her.

Hello again Ross

I sent a request to TNA yesterday with Mum's full details including a copy of her death certificate to see if they had her records. They replied this morning to say they do have her records but at the moment they are closed under the Freedom of Information act and have to be checked for sensitivity issues before determining whether they can be opened to the public.

We will wait to hear what they say before sending a request through to RAF Disclosures.

Many thanks again

Sally

As the file has been transferred then RAF Disclosures will point you to back to TNA.

TNA allows an FoI application with proof of death - they should have given link in the return correspondence to the form.

Sometimes the TNA requires a particular form and info for FoI - might be best to check that they are accepting the details you gave as FoI request to Open a Closed Record.
