Mornington / mordeaunt / mordant
« on: Yesterday at 18:27 »
I have a relative called Ann Mornington  / mordeaunt who married John Gaunt in Walsall in 1863.  Her maiden name is unusual "Mornington / mordeaunt" and from Ireland .   She was born 28th January 1847.

The 1939 census shows she is in Burton in trent and shows her date of birth and that she was from Ireland.  I believe it is Wexford (Tipperary) i maybe wrong.  Her mother is catherine all i know about her farther is his surname Mornington / mordeaunt I cant find any record of her birth.  As their first born was called John am assuming their father is also called John.  She has brothers John and William Mornington / mordeaunt.  I wondered if anyone could shed light on her birth.

I hope someone can help and this makes sense. 😊

Civil registration of births started in Ireland in 1864. Before that date, church records for her baptism (if they exist) will need to be found. You would need to know a location (parish if not actual townland) and her religion.

Not all churches have records before civil registration dates and of those that do not all are online.

Note that it was the 1939 register which was not a census.

Does the 1939 register actually list a place of birth?
Wexford and Tipperary are two separate counties.
What's given for Ann's birthplace in the 1911 census? (that's the one most likely to give at least a county of birth or something other than 'Ireland').
Does Ann's marriage not list her father's name and occupation?
It's more common for the eldest son to be called after the paternal grandfather but in any case I don't see how you can assume Ann's father was called John.
You mentioned that Ann had at least two brothers, John and William. What do you know about them. Have you found a more exact place of birth than 'Ireland' for them?

Ann is listed as Mordeaunt in the index and if born 1847 was only about 16- does the marriage certificate list her age (or call her a minor)?

This (submitted) tree shows her husband as Thomas Gaunt but lists parents as Peter and Catherine Mornington-

Ann Gaunt 36yrs b Wexford

Added
Do you have Ann in any later censuses?
I can’t see her, but there is a death for Ann Gaunt b abt 1843 in Walsall in 1889.

There is a likely Ann Gaunt in later years in Burton on Trent for the lady who you have in 1939.
