Joseph Busby in the Army? Look Up
« on: Friday 16 September 05 02:00 BST (UK) »
 :)

Could someone Look Up please a Joseph Busby in York possibly Cavalry Barracks Fulford maybe 1851 Census (at his daughters Wedding in 1859 it states he is a Pensioner...maybe a dissability Pension? Army !)  I don't think 1861 and 1871  Census would show him in the Army if he was a Pensioner?... But could you look anyway as he may have stayed on in York.I'm trying to see if the reason my Great Grandfather Joseph Bond married Lucy Busby in York 1859 ties in with her Father being in the Army, as also some of her siblings where born in Ireland Lucy and two others were Born in Woolwich or Middlesex London!
Joseph Busby's wifes name was Ann born Northumberland...I have no Maiden name for her!

Thank you       ;)

Hi Jennirosa

Do you have a date of birth for the mother, Ann and a place/date of birth for Joseph?  Which census years have you found them on?

There are some army discharge papers indexed online http://www.pro.gov.uk (search their catalogue "procat" with the series code WO97 for soldiers' discharged to pension) and there is a Joseph BUSBY included but whether he's yours or not ???

Joseph BUSBY b.Althorp Warwickshire (Royal Artillery Invalid Detachment/Royal Horse Artillery) 1829-1850, age at discharge 39.

Hi  Casalguidi   ;)

I'm afraid I don't know anymore than her name was Ann and she was born Northumberland 1851 Census in London. Only found Ann and her children on that Census. Joseph Busby snr was not mentioned. Away in the Army still?

Also I only know Lucy Busby's Father was a Joseph Busby Pensioner mentioned on Lucy Busby's Wedding Certificate!

Because two of their children were born in Ireland and one of their sons George was on the 1881 census in the Army in York, I came to the conclusion Joseph Busby snr. must have been in the army seeing he was on a Pension.
There was another son Joseph Busby jnr. but I haven't looked to see if he was in the Army also!

The Joseph Busby you found, could be him! You may have hit the jackpot!
That's possibly how Joseph and Lucy met in York. Lucy was born in Woolwich, Kent 1843 a long way in those days from York. Joseph was born supposedly 1840 in Shipton/Skipton......still can't find exactly where this elusive man came from!!

You have helped me before!
Many thanks once again,
Jenni

Hi Jenni

If your Joseph (the father) was away from home in 1851 then it might not fit with that Joseph BUSBY who was discharged from the army in 1850 :-\

These Busby's of mine seemed to have moved around a bit!
Just wish I could pin them down and find decendents!! Maybe he was staying with family around York somewhere?

Thanks,
jenni

Just wondering, Jenni, if this record isn't Joseph's.  Its from the FamilySearch site:

Joseph Busby
Christening: 18 JAN 1813   Wappenbury, Warwick, England
Parents:
Father:     JOHN BUSBY    Family
Mother:     SARAH
Batch no:     C042832

The next town over from Wappenbury is Eathorpe, Warwickshire.  Considering the similarily between Althorpe and Eathorpe, perhaps this is your man.

This would mean he was 16 when he enlisted.  But he wouldn't be the first (or last) boy to put his age up to enlist, assuming enlistment was at 18 years of age.

Cheers

Just looked at the marriage certificate of my Great Grandmother Elizabeth Pritchard, married in York 1in 1857, she has registered her father as Joseph Busby 'Librarian at York Barracks'.   I know he married Ann Wilson in Newcastle on Tyne in 1834. I know of three daughters, the aforementioned Elizabeth born 1837, Sarah born 1835 (both in Newcastle) and Emma born in Coventry in 1851. On Emma's birth certificate he is listed as 'Labourer'. I can't find any mention of him in the York street directories for the 1850s, and am very doubtful about him being a librarian (His daughter may have been trying to inflate her family's position in society!) A Joseph Busby is registered as dying in York in 1865, but he is not buried in York Cemetery.
That's what I know. I googled Joseph yesterday and was amazed when up he popped up - which is why I've joined Roots and have contacted you today. This is so intriguing, from the info you've posted there are so many anomalies with 'my' Joseph Busby, yet so many similarities. I look forward to hearing from you!
