Lownds/Short - Wednesbury
« on: Sunday 02 November 25 19:32 GMT (UK) »
I have found the following marriages in St Bartholemews church:

Sarah Lownds to John Short in 1765
John Lownds and Elizabeth Short in 1772

Both John Short and Elizabeth Short were the children of John Short and Eleanor Davis.

I am looking for the parents of Sarah Lownds and John Lownds- I am not sure at this stage if they are siblings or if they are have other siblings in the area. Any help on this would be more appreciated thank you in advance M x

On freereg I do not see any baptisms for the name in Wednesbury but there are possibilities further north in Staffordshire, where the name sounds strongest with various spellings. I do not see any in the adjoining Counties.

Added. There may be results on other sites?

Good Morning
The key to his is the extra info offered on the marriage licences.Luckily both married by licence.
So
John Short 47 year old widower  gunsmith married Sarah Lounds  age 23 or 24  spinster of the parish of Wednesbury 10.6.1765.
His wife Eleanor having died and been buried 12.10.1764.
Children Margaret 9.9.1766 and Robert 6.3.1769 follow before John is buried 25.1.1769.
John dying just before his youngest son Robert is baptised.

Then we have
Elizabeth Short age 18 marrying John Lound/Lowns  age 24 gun stock maker 17.11.1772 .Consent to the marriage is given by Elizabeth's lawful guardian Sarah Short (nee Lounds) her step mother.

Sarah Short widow age 30 remarries soon after -26.11.1772 to Joseph Stables/Staples 23 bach gun polisher of Wednesbury .
She is buried Sarah Staples 1738-28.11.1817 at Wednesbury of Tipton.

There is also a Mary Lowns who marries 6.1.1770 a Thomas Stokes at Wednesbury .

So the Short family are father John Short and his daughter Elizabeth.
The Lownds are 3 siblings -Sarah born 1742 ,Mary and John 1748.

The Lownds are from Stone, staffordshire ,the children of Mathew and Margaret Lownds of Hilderstone.
Mathew married Margaret Dun at Eccleshall 17.4.1741 ,both of Stone.
Children - Sarah 11.9.1741
Margaret 3.7.1743 (m 16.10.1772 at Shifnal William Withington)
              John 28.4.1745- 2.11.1745
              John 19.7.1747
              Mary 23.2.1748
Martha 23.8.1750 (m 6.2.1774 Robert Moore at Shifnal)
              Elizabeth 13.12.1751-20.12.1751

Margaret is buried 20.3.1783 and Mathew 25.10.1784.
His Will names his children John,Mary Stokes,Margaret Witherton/Withington  ,Martha Moore and Sarah Steeple.(really Staples)
He was worth about £100 and a wheelwright. His son gets the house and the rest is divided equally.

I've not got his baptism at the moment but will do a bit  more digging.

Hi
Sorry not to get back to you earlier.
There was a William but he looks like he is a first cousin.
Going backwards
Mathew married Margaret Dunn 1741 at Stone.
It looks like he was the son of another Mathew and Margaret and getting on a bit when he married.
Mathew senior married Margaret Wood 10.1.1690
Children John 29.8.1691Caverswell
             Mathew 14.8.1698 Caversell
            Margaret 6.10.1700 Caverswell
           Anna 1.7.1702 Caverswell
John 19.4.1702 s of Matt at Stone.
Elizabeth 15.10.1704 d of Matt at Stone
William 20.7.1707 Stone who had a son William at Stone 20.6.1731.Wife /mother Margaret Weetton married 6.7.1731 Stone.

Mathew senior buried Stone 3.8.1739 a carpenter of Hilderstone .
Admin granted to widow Margaret at Stoke on Trent £40 and again 1816 to great grand son Samuel Hoose other wise Hulse.

I didn't add it on because your Mathew would be 43 when he married as a bachelor in 1741.But then if his father was ill for a long time ,and he had to look after his widowed mother ,that could be right.

And Margaret Dunn did have a child before the marriage Ann 22.8.1736 of Hilderstone.
Her parents William Dunn and Sarah Cookes married 29.11.1709 at Stone of Hilderstone.
I can't see a baptism for her but she is left a portion in his 1779 Will and her daughter Ann gets £10. (Elder son John and then youngest son William Dunn bapt 20.4.1718)
So Margaret 31 to 21 when she married.

Why no son William after her father ?

Best I can do .Most of the Lowndes in Stone are Mathew or John but there is occasional Williams such as William s of Thomas and Margaret bapt 30.1.1678.

Mathew Lowndes senior seems to be baptised 11.2.1660 s of John at Stone.
John's Will 1666 leaves money to wife Johanne ,his son Mathew and daughter Margaret (bapt 4.4.1659) and mentions his brother Mathew. That's the earliest I can find.
