Well he certainly covered up his tracks for a while! Wonder what happened to 'second wife' and did his son Sydney George know about her!
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

According to what Eysee posted on Findagrave he had these sons

MITCHELL — In Alameda, February 3, 1902, Robert Martin Mitchell, beloved husband of Marie Mitchell, and father of Frank. George E., Robert M. Jr.- and William A. Mitchell, a native of Dublin, aged 81 years 6 months and 16 days. "The funeral will take place to-day (Wednesday), at. 1:30 o'clock, from the parlors of H. IF. Suhr- & . Co., 1137 Mission street, between Seventh and Eighth. Cremation private. Cypress Lawn Cemetery, by electric funeral car from Eighth and Harrison streets. Please omit . flowers.

INFORMATION Wanted as to the whereabouts of Robert M. Mitchell last heard of in Auckland about '63; formely from Dublin, Ireland. - A. H. Maguire - Herald Office.

I suppose this is his grandson Alfred Hugh Maguire, b. 1873 in Belfast and married in New Zealand on 1 Aug 1898!
