Unknown family member(s)
« on: Thursday 30 October 25 18:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I've inherited lots of family photographs, but I have no idea who many of them are. They all belonged to my late grandparents or great-grandparents.

This is, I believe a photograph of at least one of my great-grandfather's brothers.

On the back of the image it says, "From yours sincerely Bert with love and best wishes to Hilda." Someone has also written, "Year 1919."

I believe that one of the men (on the right) could be Bertie Garnham (b. 1893 in Hopton by Thetford, Suffolk and d. 1958 in Rotherham, Yorkshire), but he didn't marry a Hilda.

Three of his brothers did marry a Hilda; Fred Garnham, Ernest Garnham and Albert Garnham. However, Albert would have only been 17 in 1919 and the second man looks much older.

If anyone recognises either of the men and could help that would be greatly appreciated.

This is my very first post, so hopefully I have done this correctly. Thank you

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your reply. I can't say that they are the ones in the photograph, but I do have a Norfolk Regiment cap badge and also several tunic buttons. My late grandfather left them to me.

Thank you for the info. Bertie is definitely the right person. However, none of the other Garnhams listed are linked to my family...as of yet!

Bertie's siblings were Frederick William Garnham, George Herbert Garnham (d. 1919 after being gassed during WWI), Ernest Sydney Garnham and Albert Edward Garnham. There was also a half sibling Leonard Garnham, whose birth name was James Leonard Brock.

It would help us to help you, if you gave us the names of the parents, and list names and dob of all the sons.

Thank you for your replies.

George Herbert Garnham is buried locally in a War Grave.

The children were: James Leonard Brock aka Lennie Garnham (b. 1885 Hopton by Thetford d. 1956 Rotherham, Frederick William Garnham (b. 1888 Hopton by Thetford d. 1941 Rotherham), George Herbert Garnham (b. 1888 Hopton by Thetford d. 1919 Sheffield), Ernest Sydney Garnham (b. 1891 Gasthorpe d. 1952 Rotherham), Bertie Garnham (b. 1893 Hopton by Thetford d. 1958 Rotherham) and Albert Edward Garnham (b. 1902 Hopton by Thetford d. 1975 Rotherham).

Their parents were Noah Garnham aka Nathan and Betsy Ellen Brock aka Ellen or Nellie.

I always presumed that the brother on the left was George, but he was in the Royal Field Artillery and not (as I understand) the Norfolk Regiment. That would leave the unidentified person as Lennie, Fred or Albert (who was too young). I know that it isn't Ernest. Or, it is simply a comrade of Bertie's.

I would truly love to solve this family puzzle of who the men actually are.
