Following up on Genene, there is this marriage:

Marriage Jun 1925 Marylebone 1a 1329
Buckley    William A R    Coelen
Coelen    Eugenie M J    Buckley

Maybe Eugenie preferred to be called Genene.

Birth June 1905 Uxbridge 3a 39
Coelen    Eugenie J M

In 1911 Eugenie (b. 1905) is with her parents, Gerard F J H Coelen and Marie A G V Coelen. Her parents were born in Holland (maybe where the South Africa connection came from - surname/accent??)

The 1939 entry (William Buckley/Genene Mackenzie) has her birth as 20th March 1908.
However, The Daily News (London) dated 24 March 1905 has this birth announcement.  "COELEN - 20th March, at The Warren, Northwood, Middlesex, the wife of Gerard Coelen, of a daughter".  Same address as 1911.

Eugenie can also be found in 1921 with her widowed mother as guests at a hotel in Pembridge Square, London.

I'm still looking but will post this for your thoughts.

Well found Jool. Ernest George/George Ernest was born 6th March 1892. he appears as a married man in war register with this same dob as George O Mackenzie. He also appears in the London electoral registers at the 1939 address from 1935-9 as George Ernest MacKenzie

William seems to have  remarried a Mary Usher in 1926 Midlothian. Wonder if he and Eugenie divorced?

The person who wrote out the 1939 page had very idiosyncratic handwriting. Looking at other examples on neighbouring pages I would say that the initial after George isn't 'O' but 'E'.

Compare with the 'E' in Eliza on these snips

George E Mackenzie's occupation in 1939 was Advertising Manager.

This fits well with the occupation of the George Mackenzie who died in 1956.

Ernest George Mackenzie has quite a distinctive signature at the bottom of the 1921 census (when he is with Jessie and Kenneth).  Maybe Francis could order a copy of the probate record for George Ernest Mackenzie posted by softly softly in post #7 and compare the signature.  It only costs £1.50.

Given the coincidence of the dates of birth I think it seems a strong possibility.

I like Jool's idea of comparing signatures.
