Idebtifying the Uniform
« on: Tuesday 28 October 25 09:34 GMT (UK) »
Good Morning Folks, I have been sent the attached photograph. Unfortuntaley this is the best copy they have.

It is three brothers. The one in the centre I think is a policeman and the one on the right is obviously in the navy and I think I know who they both are. The name on the back suggests that the other one could be my partner's grandfather. Although the family are confusing, one brother called Henry preferred being called Harry while the grandfather's name was Alfred Harold and he went by Harold. We have found nothing to suggest that Henry / Harry was ever in the forces hence the family assumption that is must be Harold.
The photo must have been taken about the end of WWI given the ages of the other two. The trouble is that Harold only joined up at the end of the war when he was 18 and only got as far as Signal's School at Blandford Camp. That uniform, and perhaps the age, do not suggest a lad at signal's school. Any suggestions please on the uniform with jodphurs, spurs and a crop etc.

The photo came out a bit odd in that post. Second attempt...

It's hard to make out the soldier's cap badge but it could be Royal Engineers which would tally with attending Signals School.

The RE were not at Blandford Camp in 1918.  It was used by the Royal Naval Division from 1915 and then the Royal Flying Corps in 1918.

My apologies for not being clearer. Thank you alan o for that information. I do now recall that Harold was in the RAF in 1918 when he went to Signal School.

So it looks like the guy with the riding gear must be Henry / Harry and I need to try and find a service record for him in WWI. If anyone could hazard a guess on regiment based on the uniform it might give me a leg up in my search. Thanks

... and thank you Shaun J for your contribution too. It has all helped to eliminate Harold as the possible 3rd person.

The spurs etc show that he was a horseman.  This might be cavalry, yeomanry but also Royal Engineers, Army Service Corps, Artillery and even some infantry rode horses.
