1841 Liverpool census page
« on: Friday 24 October 25 20:35 BST (UK) »
Can some eagle-eyed people read an occupation and age for me off this census page? It is the 10th name down on the page. The name is Edward Jones, aged 25 living with a Jane Jones, aged 24 and a baby also named Edward.
I can't read the elder Edward's occupation nor the age of baby Edward? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I'm seeing Ewards Occupation as  " ?  Merchant"
Co Clare - Corry, Duggan, Hogan, Linnane, Madden, Molony, Noonan
Co Tipperary - Dorgan/Dargan/Durgan, Jones
Llanelly - Davis, Evans, Peregrine
Sussex - Fermor, Martin

Wow, thanks everyone for the lightning fast reply!!

I was thinking S Merchant too. Any idea what the S might stand for? If it's any help (and assuming this is the Edward Jones I think it is), he was described as a shopkeeper on his marriage certificate in 1839.

I vote for S Mason. I don't think it is a T at the end of the word (compare 'optician' on the line above?) As J for journeyman it is just like the ones added to several other entries, plasterer J, skinner J etc. Presumably written later as it is a different shape to the J of Jonas, Jane and John, so there is always the possibility it shouldn't be on Edward's entry at all?
As Rosie has found an alternate Edward and Jane, which couple do you think is more likely to be the one you are looking for?

Probable marriage for the stone mason:

Edward Pearson Jones, stone mason, and Jane Morris, 30 January 1839, St Peter's Liverpool.

EPJ was baptised in 1815 so the age is right for the 1841 census entry.
