Mary Jane Myers
« on: Wednesday 22 October 25 16:51 BST (UK) »
I have never been able to locate a birth or baptismal certificate for my great grandmother Mary Jane Myers. She was born in about 1863, record say in Belfast on the 1901 census, her parents were Edward Myers and Eliza McQuissick. They were married in St Anne’s C of I in Belfast in 1854.  She married William Rodgers in St Malachy’s Church Belfast, had nine children, and died in 1904 age 40.  Would anyone have any advice to find her birth or perhaps school records.
Thank you

Birth registration started 1864. St Anne's baptisms are transcribed on RootsIreland, along with some other Belfast churches. Others are offline access only.

Surely Mary Jane Mayers married William Rodgers in St Anne's Church of Ireland 1880 https://irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/marriage_returns/marriages_1880/11039/8037525.pdf

Maybe the children were baptised St Malachy’s as I see on the 1901 census the family was Roman Catholic so presumably 1880 was a mixed marriage.

National School records are in PRONI you need to know the school first and then order and read.

Thank you Jon
Of course, you are correct, Mary Jane and William were married in St Anna C of I Belfast. It’s been a long time since I did this research and I have forgotten more than a few details.
Mary Jane’s death certificate says she was 39, so born in 1865.  Baptism may have been in other than C of I, I am at a loss to find it.
She is buried in the City Cemetery, with her aunt ( mother's sister) Susanna Hall nee McQuissick. William is buried in Milltown. They lived together till their death in 1904, having had nine children, the youngest being 2 years.

Ages on death certificates are not always accurate, especially when many people would not have known their own exact date of birth let alone that of someone else.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

The 1901 census age of 38 works out as born 1863 and she at least pretended to be 21 (ie full age) on her 1880 marriage = 1859 birth. There isn't a civil birth record so born anytime 1858-1863 is likely. Ages are rarely accurate, often people age 7 or 8 years, some only 3 between 1901 & 1911.
The 1901 census says Mary Jane could read and write whilst husband could read only and marked X as head of family, but both marked X on their marriage. Age and birthdays were not important, either well enough to work or not and only way they could find out to obtain the baptismal cert you are looking for.
Agree Mary Jane could have been baptised elsewhere but RootsIreland or Ulster Historical Foundation are the best available online sources of Protestant baptisms in Cos Antrim & Down. Either she is listed or is not in which case you have elimated several churches if you were to consider trawling through PRONI microfilms, or their digital images of St Anne's (I wouldn't want to look through 5 years of St Anne's; with a date finding the image straightforward).

Thank you all very much. I found the death certificates in the past, along with five children out of ten who also died in infancy or young years.
It’s hard for us to imagine a world without vaccines and antibiotics, life must have been awful, with so much loss.
As it’s been a while since I searched for birth or baptism of Mary Jane, I hoped that perhaps more records had been added online.
Thanks again for the replies

Lucy
