What Newspaper covers Allerton Bywater
« on: Wednesday 22 October 25 08:47 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have been contacted by some people who are looking after the grave site of Jack Longley who was from Allerton Bywater & died in 21 October 1944.
The are looking for a photo of him for their research. He is on my tree but is only part of my extended family so I do not have one.
I know he had some siblings that had children but I cannot give their names on this site. I suggested they contact the local paper to see if they had a notification of his death that had a photo.
This is where the problem is I don’t know the Allerton Bywater area & cannot say which Newspaper to contact so could one of you kind people let me know which Newspaper covered it.

Regards
John

the only J Longley death I can see for Q4 1944 on the GRO site is
John William Longley, who was 69 when he died
Ref: Q4 1944, Bradford 9b 18

online newspapers report about the death of a man of this name and age who had been Lord Mayor of Bradford, but the date of death is reported as 26 Oct, not 21 Oct as per your post. I can't see any sign of a photo in the year he died.
IF this is the right man, there was a photo of him and his wife published in 1932  (he was Lord Mayor 1932-1933) Leeds Mercury 9th Nov 1932, page 10
If its not the right one, can you post his death registration ref ?

thanks bearkat, it would have cut down the newspaper search time if I'd known he died on active service :-)

It might be easier to post on the Allerton Bywater Facebook page rather than a local newspaper.

There are some private groups too.

Thank you for your help & so prompt as usual.

It was a longshot & I will pass the information on.

They were miners & I think his siblings moved to the Pontefract area so not in Allerton Bywater any more.

Thanks

Allerton Bywater was a mining community but Jack was a tailor's cutter in 1939.

As you know the names of Jack's nieces & nephews it may be worth looking to see if they are on Facebook.

I looked at online newspapers and haven't find a mention of his death.

Jack is included in a few Ancestry family trees but none include a photo.

The men listed on the war memorial have been researched but Jack is one of the few that have no details.

Hi

Yes he was a tailors cutters but family were connected to mining. And to make things more complicated after the early death of his mother it seem some of the children went to live with relatives.

The link is confirmed by his probate.

I will check the memorial site & pass his details on.
