Hetherton
« on: Wednesday 22 October 25 03:29 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any connection to the surname of Hetherton from the Tyrone area of Ireland in the early to mid 1800's?

i do realise the Hetherton could be a form of Hetherington. The records obtained so far all state Hetherton with Tyrone origins.

I have a John Hetherton born approx 1819 Tyrone  who marries approx 1840 to Susan Harper.

Any suggestions welcome.

There are a lot of Hetherington's around the Tyrone area - Donaghmore as a few but no Hetherton but as you say could be a spelling variation  . . .
Draperstown: Trowlan, Quinn, Convery, Kelly, McKenna, Griffin, Sergeant, Hamilton, Taylor.
Monaghan: Duffy, McArdle
Sligo: Egan.
Mayo: Loftus.
Dungannon: Reilly, Milligan, Ryan, Harte.

The 1901 census of Tyrone has about 62 Hetheringtons but no Hethertons.

Griffiths Valuation of Tyrone (1860) has 2 Hethertons in Tyrone. Francis Hetherton in Tycanny (parish of Clogher) and Jane Hetherton in Tullyblety, Aghaloo.

Francis was a small farmer with 8 acres. Jane was also a farmer (and probably a widow, I’d suspect). She shared 26 acres with  Sarah Ann Bell.

Here’s an Ann Hetherton who died in Dungannon workhouse in 1877:

Can’t see either Francis’ or Jane’s deaths so suspect they were both before 1864 when death registration began.

1863 Hetherton marriage:

Couple more (one with no townlands):

Hi There

The surname HeAtherton appears 27 times on the 1901 census . . .

Just once that I can see in Tyrone though.

As mentioned in the article ROBERT is a possibility for the Christian name of John's father (based on naming traditions)

The name Robert Hetherton features in Derreenavoggy,  Longford on GV and a death for him in the 1880's to a rough  age match to be in the time frame as a POSSIBLE father for John . . .

Still early days yet though
