Ancestry in French
« on: Tuesday 21 October 25 17:07 BST (UK) »
Probably because of an update somewhere, when I go to the Ancestry website, it now detects that I am in France and automatically goes to the French version when I  enter the UK URL.  My British tree is in English and I don't want to have some documents in French.  Can anyone help me to remedy this problem, please?

In case it has any bearing on this, the navigators I use are Firefox and Edge. My Ancestry account settings don't have a section on language.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Regards
Judith

I don't think it will convert your documents into French, but one solution would be to use a virtual private network, or VPN. They come at all prices from free upwards. I don't use one myself so I can't recommend one.  The idea is that they tell the site that you visit that you are connecting from somewhere else.

Thank you for your suggestion.  I'll give it a try but will have to find a suitable VPN.  Any ideas anyone, please?

Look into using Opera or Brave as your web browser.

Chrome also has Addon Apps that can be easily configured to display a specific location.

BTW, VPN Addon Apps are available for Firefox, you can go view those available in Firefox’s own store.

Is Ancestry the only site on which it happens?
If so, the problem is with Ancestry.
If not, it may be with your Internet Service Provider. I'd call them and see if you can eliminate them as the source.
If not the ISP, the problem could with your computer. Find someone you know who knows about IP addresses and what to do about fixing it. Not me :).

Meanwhile, you could go to https://dnschecker.org/ip-location.php and see where it says you are connecting to the Internet. It won't be right at your home address, but should be in the same general area. Mine says at a spot 30 miles from me, in the largest city in the (US) state, which is probably where my ISP connects to the Internet itself.

Corrections on technical advice welcome. I am not a pro,and I see a couple experts have already posted.

Thank you all for your useful suggestions.  I had this problem once before but it eventually righted itself without my doing anything.  It has just started again today.  Previously I was able to log in to the UK site without any trouble although for a time I was asked if I wanted really wanted to go there or to the French site.  According to Ancestry help I should have a setting in my account that enables me to choose a region and language but it isn't there.  Maybe I should contact them about it before doing anything else.

Hello Judith, I am London-based but often visit France and have experienced the same problem of being redirected to ancestry.fr with no other choice when in France. I finally fixed the problem by Googling "Ancestry", first hit is ancestry.com, click the link, I got a page in French but by scrolling to the bottom I got a choice of language and location, and clicking on Anglais/Angleterrre took me to ancestry.co.uk and since I have had no problem...
Hope that helps,
Paul

Hi Paul
Thank you for your suggestion, which has worked for me in the past but now, even if I try to go to Ancestry.com, I don't get a choice of language or location at the bottom of the page, just a list of other sites such as Fold 3, Geneanet, etc.  When I have had this problem in the past it has eventually righted itself, so I'm living in hope that will happen again, as it's so frustrating not to have the most used British collections on the home page.  I rarely use Ancestry for my French research.

Hi Judith,
Sorry my idea does not work for you, hopefully it will come right with the next update of Windows or Firefox...
