Nevern 1851 Census confused entry
« on: Monday 20 October 25 16:02 BST (UK) »
I am researching Martha Owen(s) who is daughter of John Owen.  John was married in Meline Parish in 1826 and his age is rounded up/down to 40 on the 1840 census.  He is an ag lab.

His wife is Mary Selby (again 40 on 1841 census) who is born in the next hamlet of Eglwyserw.

Martha has a brother John born Nevern 1827-8 (rounded to aged 15 on the 1841 census).

Martha is aged 10 on 1841 census but again is most likely rounded down or up.

I can't find a death prior to 1851 census and the most likely candidate is as per scan.

However the occupations given fot the 2 women are highly odd and look like men's entries.  Also how can she be daughter to 73 year old lady when her real mother Mary would be only 50?  There is no farm from her parents as father John is an ag lab and not a farmer.  To have Martha as a General Labourer seems odd if not downright wrong.

Thaoughts on this?

Grandmother perhaps?  Mary is married so likely her husband was the farmer.

Was her father John still alive in 1851?

Alas I can't find him nor his wife Mary after the 1840 census entry.  He is in Nevern and the above looks like Llwydco?

I have no baptism record for him so don't know the parent's names either.

1841 census ages of children should only be rounded down after the age of 15.

The 1841 was taken in June and the 1851 in March so it is possible that she was 10 in June 1841 but had not yet had her birthday in 1851  :-\

Thanks.  That is helpful. If the 1851 census was in March and she was recorded as 19 then her birthday may have been between March and June census date.

I have no idea I am afraid.

This is the closest marriage entry on FreeBMD.  Not sure which Mr Rees she married though.
