Birth records Philadelphia
« on: Sunday 19 October 25 14:28 BST (UK) »
I'm new to researching American records (I live in England) and have found it difficult to find birth records. I'm looking for Henry Joseph Young born 1861 in Philadelphia. There is a record on Family Search that lists his parents as Edwin and Sarah I (?) Young but I've not been able to locate the family in 1870. I have found an entry in 1870 that could possibly be Henry in 15 Ward 47th District that seems to be a children's home.
I have also found a Violet Young  aged 8 and a Wilmina Young aged 6 and wondered if these were his sisters, but as yet I cannot find a birth record for either of them.

Henry married Hannah Greener(from Northumberland, England) in 1885 in Hammonton New Jersey and a daughter Hannah was born in 1887. A son Henry Joseph was born in 1890. By 1891 the family had moved back to England and they lived in Felling, Northumberland. I haven't been able to find them on any passenger lists.

Hoping someone can find some answers .

Jenny

Not every place in the US required birth records that early, and even in the places that had them, people weren't always consistent with civil registration of the births.  So it could be hit or miss as to whether those birth records exist.  Sometimes baptism records can be found instead, but not always.

Do you have the name of Henry's parents from any other source?  If not, you could try ordering the marriage record from the NJ state archives.  https://wwwdnet-dos.nj.gov/DOS_ArchivesDBPortal/index.aspx  (Their index has Hannah's surname transcribed as Gruner.)  With a common name like Henry Young, it would be better to have specific information that you are more certain is him rather than guessing which birth record might be him and potentially going up the wrong tree.

Have you seen the original marriage certificate?

Sometimes the parents names are listed.

Many thanks for the information you have provided. I'm helping a friend so will ask her if she wants to continue with the search.

Thanks for finding these baptisms. I thought Henry's father's name was Edwin so maybe these aren't his siblings. Will ask my friend if she wants to go any further.

He may be a relative, Joseph named a daughter Violet and another Sarah Jane.

Perhaps a coincidence.

Do not believe family trees on any platform especially family search, many are simply copies of others
work that "fit" not researched.   Do your own research.

I had found that Henry Joseph had named a daughter Violet and when I found her in the children's home in 1870 I thought it could be his sister. I never assume that family trees on sites are correct as I have seen so many mistakes. I like to do my own research and then compare.

Thanks again for your help
