Ancestry DNA update
« on: Tuesday 14 October 25 21:56 BST (UK) »
I know we have to take these results with a large pinch of salt, but I find my latest update rather odd.
I seem to have acquired North East England, but I guess that is my very Lowland Scots, though I also have "Scotland Central and N.I.", plus a tiny bit from the Highlands and Islands. I have also lost my 2 per cent Irish, from my one Irish ancestor.
South East England and N W Europe has gone from 52pc to 72pc! I always knew I was an Anglo Saxon. :D

Toth, I too have acquired a new Region of 18% East Midlands where there was none before.  I've lost ALL of my Lancashire, which was about 20%.  I was born in Lancashire and have good Lancashire roots on both sides going back to early 1800s.  Both my Paternal Aunt and Maternal Uncle have a good amount of North Wales & North West England still, 20% & 30%.  However they are both showing a small amount of East Midlands now.

I have now got 3% North East England this shows it is on my paternal side, who as far as I know never ventured further north than the Watford Gap. Further problem is the matches it shows are all on my maternal side. ??????????
Cross Steeple Claydon Bucks,  Jennings Steeple Claydon Bucks,  Steel Byfield Northants,  Rogers Northants,  Wheeler Oxon,  Roberts Oxon,  Bonham Oxon/ Middleton Cheney Northants,  Maycock Northants,  Abbott Northants , Newman Northants, Buckingham Bucks, Hart Warks, Newth Gloucs.

But what about several generations of your father's ancestors? It doesn't just relate to your father.

Well I have traced them back to the late 1700s with no sign of them leaving Buckinghamshire or Oxfordshire.

Also why are the matches shown all my maternal side?

Do you literally mean all of them are maternal, or just a very large majority? Possibly one branch of your family and their Descendants have shown no interest and haven't provided DNA samples for testing.  I only have matches relating to seven of my great grandparents.  DNA tests are illegal in France, so if you have any French ancestry, that will not generally be visible.

What I mean is with this 'new' ethnicity when I click on North East England it shows paternal side 3% maternal side 0%.

Underneath it shows matches, they are all from my maternal side, on fact all from my mother's fathers family.

Every update gets worse!
On my paternal side - all his father's family came from Berkshire (the bit that's now Oxfordshire) and his mother's family were from Sussex (on her paternal side) and Jersey (on her maternal side). The Jersey family is a bit more complicated as I think on two occasions Scots had married in to the ancestral line.
On my maternal side - all her father's family were from South Dorset / Hants border to new Forest and all her mother's family were from Yorkshire.

new "Origins"
Southeastern England & Northwestern Europe 46% (39% Paternal, 7% Maternal)
East Midlands  22%   (4% Paternal, 18 % Maternal)
Northern Wales & North West England: 10% (all maternal)
Northwestern Germany: 7%  (all maternal)
Leinster, Ireland: 4% (all paternal)
Devon & Somerset: 3%  (all maternal)
Central Scotland & Northern Ireland: 3%  (all maternal)
West Midlands: 3% (all paternal)
The Netherlands: 2% (all maternal)

So my mother's ethnicity would be
Southeastern England & Northwestern Europe 14%
East Midlands  36%
Northern Wales & North West England: 20%
Northwestern Germany: 14%
Devon & Somerset: 6%
Central Scotland & Northern Ireland: 6%
The Netherlands: 4%

SE England according to Ancestry's map does seem to cover Hants and Dorset (but 14% is low considering it should be close to 50), but no way should she have any ethnicity from east Midlands unless that is Ancestry's new name for Yorkshire. And north Wales / NW England / Germany or the Netherlands ?!

My father's ethnicity would be:
Southeastern England & Northwestern Europe 78%
East Midlands  8%
Leinster, Ireland: 8%
West Midlands: 6%

OH has a simpler ethnicity. Father's side from SW Essex and mother's side from Suffolk / Norfolk border. So how does his mother's ethnicity contribute 4% from SW Ireland?
he has 10% Netherlands from his mother's side, and 9% Denmark from his father's side. But the three closest matches with the same Denmark match are all from his mother's side.
Definite about the relationship, one is a first cousin, the second is the 1C's daughter and the third is the daughter of another first cousin.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Just looked at a 3C1R. I am related to his father's side through my father's paternal side, so unsurprisingly predominantly SE England with a smattering of Midlands. His Berks / Oxon ancestors migrated to Hampshire. But his mother was from Iceland and according to his tree has only Icelandic ancestry. His ethnicity shows exactly 50% Iceland. So it works sometimes
