Moving Google Photos back to tablet / phone.
« on: Saturday 11 October 25 15:35 BST (UK) »
I have new SD cards. One for my Samsung phone which never had one and  a larger gb one for my Samsung tablet.

Firstly,  how do copy images from internal storage to SD cards.
I would rather copy in case I mess up and risk losing them if I choose move.

How do I get images backed up to Google photos back on my tablet / phone.

I am struggling to work it all out , especially the folders business. 🙁🤔Thanks

Rather than use the Chinese whispers of a forum, look on YouTube for a tutorial for both of your problems.  The short answer is that you need a file management program on your phone or tablet.

And definitely use copy rather than move.

Lexar 126Gb memory stick, with both USB A and C plugs should work better than an SD card, these are £15 from Amazon.

Do check that the Samsung supports On The Go connectivity.

Then use a File Management App to copy from the Samsung to the Memory stick.

If you store your images on your Google Drive then you can log into it on a PC or Mac and copy the images to whatever storage device you wish.  If you do this do check that the images on the Google Drive are the original resolution.

In Google when logged in click on the 4 squares, select Photos > Settings > Export Data.  It then exports as a zip file which you can use as you wish and/or keep as a Backup.

For getting the images onto say a new device do the opposite of the above to copy the images from the memory stick to the new device

Thanks. It's still a bit confusing.  When I move images to sd card from internal storage , do they go in the folders they are in now, or as individual files.   Then I have to save them in new folders. I'm reluctant to start in case I mess up.

I think I can use On the Go with my tablet but not sure about the phone because it's a different connector type, does that make sense.

Google is your friend, it will be quicker for you to search there than here.

Yes, as Biggles and I have already said, spend some time learning how to manipulate files on whatever device and whatever operating system you are using. There is no point doing anything with a computing device if you don't understand how to manipulate, manoeuver and save your data. I have spent my career telling everybody from chief executives on down, that if they don't know where their data is and how to look after it they might as well not bother.  If you don't understand basic organization and file structure then you are wasting your time.

Wise words Zaph. I am currently going through the photos and deleting which I really don't need. I have a tendency to screen shot stuff that I find interesting, and then leave them there even when I have finished the research on my desktop.
I am taking it slowly.  Thanks for the advice.
I tried to use Gimp for editing photos in the past but gave up because the terminology didn't make any sense,  I just don't understand it.
I am better at researching a family of Jones from Bala  who in every generation named their children John, Joseph, Jane and Mary 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿😀

Having no artistic ability, and never having used graphics software professionally, I don't know much about GIMP but it is well-esteemed.  YouTube will have many tutorials.

Plus, I never really see the need for editing image files other than a simple bit of cut and paste. Why do people want to edit family history image source documents?  You wouldn't edit a census form or a BMD record.

Yes Zaph one would edit an image of census form, just as you edit the scanned image of old family photos.

For say an image of an original census form, many can be very difficult to read and by using a Photo Editing App the image can be enhanced to make the text far more legible.

Being the sad person I am there are digital images on my PC of all the census records for each direct ancestor of mine, and each image has been enhanced to be as clear and easy to read as possible.

Same process with Newspaper articles and any other downloaded or screenshot of a document that was the subject of a poor quality scan or photographic image.

What I hope will be of use to future generations is the PDF Booklets that I have been creating for each Grandparent line and for individuals with an interesting take to tell and the applicable images as described above are used in the creation of the Booklet.

So yes Photo Editing Apps and a Publishing App can be very useful tools and well worth the time and effort in learning how to use them.

That said with an iPhone/iPad the inbuilt Photo Editing App is quick and easy to use and very good for enhancing the legibility of text.
