Bird Family of Exeter
« on: Saturday 11 October 25 12:48 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to locate any photographs of my ancestors who ran a shop in Heavitree, Exeter in the period from 1923 to 1970. Specifically William and Hilda Bird who ran Roselands Grocery Store at 1 Stuart Road, Heavitree, Exeter. They had four children, Douglas, Thelma, Sonia and Geoffrey. They were married in Heavitree, Exeter on 16 October 1920. Hilda died in 1971 and William died in 1973. Does anyone on this forum have any information or photographs of their shop during this period to share with me please ?

Added - the URL is delivering a Facebook page, not the view of Stuart Street I was seeing

Are any of the children still alive?  We aren't allowed to name any living persons so you should remove their names if you aren't sure  :)

My ancestors shop was at the end of the street shown in the picture on the left but sadly the shop was out of view. Thanks for the Facebook link though.

I've found a couple of newspaper items for "Roseland Stores, 1 Stuart Street" but outside your timeframe (1923-1970).
There is an advertisement in the Express and Echo, 12 Dec 1963, wishing all our customers a Merry Xmas - but the wishes are certainly not from "William and Hilda"

Now we know they had sold the business by then and moved to nearby East Wonsford Hill. I will continue my quest to find a photo of their grocery store !

I live not far from Stuart Road, I suspect the shop was converted into a house at some point. It might be worth you posting on a page on Facebook called Exeter Past and
Present or Exeter Memories. East Wonford Hill is not very far from there.

Thank you Barb
I have posted a request on Facebook Exeter Memories already but I'll try Exeter Past and Present as well.
