Avery Vokins
« on: Saturday 11 October 25 10:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Would anyone be able to help me trace who Avery Vokins married in 1698 via the England, Phillimore Marriage Registers, 1531-1913? Marriage was in Aldgate St James Duke's Place, London, England.

Thank you.

Coreen

Phillimore's gives bride's name as Mary Knap.  No exact date given.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi,

Thank you for the quick response. From previous records I have looked at he has been recorded as having married Mary Knap on 08/01/1692 so perhaps that is an error in the transcript. I think Mary died in 1693 and then Avery went on to marry Ann Wood on 25/10/1694. They had a son, Thomas in 1696, and then Ann seems to have died in January 1698.  I wondered if he had married again after Ann's death as in 1702 another Thomas Vokins was born to an Avery and Elizabeth Vokins.

Kind regards,

Coreen

I don’t know why it says 1698 on the index. The image is clearly headed 1692/63

Hi,

I don't think that is the correct Avery Vokins, (although probably a relative). I think the correct Avery Vokins died in 1750. His Will refers to son, Thomas and grandson, Philip Constable. Philip was the son of Avery's daughter, Mary.

Kind regards,

Coreen

Hi,

Thank you mckha489. It seems that the correct date of Avery's first marriage is indeed 08/01/1692 (especially as I believe her to have died in 1693).

Kind regards,

Coreen

Hi,

Thank you for the quick response. From previous records I have looked at he has been recorded as having married Mary Knap on 08/01/1692
Coreen

FMPs transcript of Phillimore's Marriage Register 1531 - 1913, Vol 3 reads
Name - Avery Vokins, Event date ? ? 1698, spouse Mary Knap, Aldgate St James Duke's Place

Looking at the register itself the page (113) is headed -
St. James Duke's Place
1692 - 1693 continued

and the marriage entry reads -
" Avery Vokins, b., & Mary Knap, s., Robert Witty

The " at the start of the line is a ditto that applies to the number 8 that appears against a William Morris 9 entries earlier and is the day of marriage.

So the Phillimore date of marriage can be deduced as 1692-93, January, 8. I have checked other transcripts of names on the same page (inc William Morris) and they, too, enjoy an Event date ? ? 1698!!

You may wish to bear in mind that this is old calendar.
